Mosaic eBook Irving S White Reviews

An unusual first novel written by a screenwriter from a visual and very personal point of view.
Use of Yiddish phrases will be familiar to some readers, but need to be more fully explained for general audiences.
A warm, wonderful journey from Chicago's Humboldt Part neighborhood to the movie-making power structure of Hollywood. Irv White brings Dr. Greener's struggles to life in a fast moving, interesting novel that will hold your attention....all the way through his defiance of the power-brokers in LALA Land. A great first novel by a knowledgeable Hollywood insider.
White tells a beautiful story of self discovery set in a land filled with tension, conflict, and deep historic passion...the Land of Israel. Anyone interested in the struggle to achieve an authentic identity will be gripped by the protagonist's unquenchable determination to integrate his past and present in order to live a life which fully reflects his core values
and abilities. A moving and transforming story well told.
Wonderful story of a confused young Jewish psychologist living in Los Angeles. Tells how he regains his moral bearings as he pursues an initially "wild idea" to produce for the screen and write the screenplay for a novel by a Nobel-winning Jewish Author. Very engaging reading.
This is the story of a young screenwriter, Sam Greener, on an odyssey from Hollywood to Manhattan to Israel, as he is forced to confront his roots and loyalties, with an ultimate test of courage (and his own future) as he faces Arab terrorists who threaten his family's life. As the novel begins, Greener finds himself huddled in the grass outside a cottage in his kibbutz, as the terrorists have taken over the children's quarters. How is this for a first sentence of a story "Sam Greener, thirty-four years old, ten thousand miles away from his Los Angeles home, with a rifle in his unaccustomed hand, was soundly frightened by the immediate noises of death before him."
Sam Greener, a clinical psychologist and budding screenwriter, experiences a psychological and spiritual awakening while attending a lecture by Jacob Schreiber, a renowned Jewish writer who recently won the Nobel Prize (clearly modeled after I.B. Singer). This event ignites in Greener a combustion of intense memories of a very Jewish upbringing in Chicago as well as a neglected desire to write something of deeper meaning. His re-examination of the meaning of self-realization plunges Sam into a vortex of discovery and an attempt ultimately to integrate the disparate pieces of his life, as in a mosaic.

We follow his dream of writing the screenplay of Schreiber's latest work, to New York, and inevitably to Israel as he throws off the shackles tying him to a safe existence. He discovers untapped reservoirs of courage in conflict-ridden Israel and returns to the US to struggle for his dream after numerous setbacks and where he finally emerges triumphant.

Exquisite and vivid writing illuminating the passionate odyssey of a Jewish man fiercely determined to integrate the bountiful treasures of tradition with today's very complex contemporary life.
Mosaic is a "Coming of Age" novel even though the protagonist, Sam Greener, is in his thirties. And what a wondrous albeit somewhat bumpy journey he takes in order to find his emotional authenticity. There are many strands or elements that the fractured Sam must get in touch with and then weave or piece together to make a complete mosaic mirroring a whole Sam. Sam comes to terms with his Jewish self and acknowledges that his traditional upbringing has provided a strong and ethical framework for living, loving, and work. Sam comes to terms with the Jungian creative self with its urgent mandate to write to express his authentic spirit. Sam comes to terms with his professional life so he can create and work with a Nobel Prize winner to construct a movie with soul. Sam comes to terms with an imperative to change from passivity and a reactive nature to dynamism, boldness and audacity so he can deal with Hollywood and all its machinations. Sam comes to terms with a dormant bravery so he can share heroism in action to overcome an Arab terrorist attack in Israel. And finally Sam comes to terms with his deep love for Rachel Korngold so he can make solid a lifetime commitment to her. Dr. Irving White has written a remarkable work. He is able to make Sam Greener into a whole, moving and inspiring personage. It is truly an astounding and gripping trip.
